On The Fringes *

On The Fringes', is a project fully-funded by Creative Scotland in conjunction with Artist in Residence Programme at The Glasgow School of Art. I have hand-woven a body of work in form of tapestries on a TC2 digital jacquard loom as part of my ongoing research into digital woven textile as a medium.

The project explores the themes of migration and the history of my native region of Slovenia on the Austrian, Croatian, and Hungarian borders.

I have reimagined historical political maps through my lens as a working-class migrant of Slovene, Croatian, Hungarian, and Romani descent, now resident in Scotland. The complex ethnic heritage of my family, as well as the region's multiple border changes over the past centuries, has been, at times, disorienting on a personal level.

Conveyed through a woven tapestry, this project represents an experimental reinterpretation of maps, historical photographs, and botanical illustrations as a way of reclaiming a previously colonised space in the Central and Eastern European context - In the hope of challenging the arbitrary nature of politically determined borders, I reimagine how maps and diagrams could become more fluid when motivated by more inclusive thinking and planning.

The tapestry project captures a personal moment of contemplation on these territories through image formation. I translate these images into codes, woven structures, and materials - journeying from a digital to an analogue space.

HYBRID

Intersection Between Craft

and Collaboration

GSA Artist in Residence

Group Exhibition

Hybrid showcase displays individual and collective works of Artists in Residence at the Glasgow School of Art, who are reimagining, challenging, and expanding the notion of craft-making through innovative approaches.

The showcase explore hybrid concepts and cross-cultural intersections using analogue and digital means of expression.

This thoughtfully curated collection of individual and collective works amplifies the relevance of symbiotic relationships between the poetic and the linguistic, realism and surrealism, fluidity and statics, trauma and intimacy, and the cross-fertilisation of cultures through objects, jewellery, and textiles.

Collaborations between artists bridge the gap between disciplines, sharing skills and techniques to create cohesive artworks.
